Denver Colorado Real Estate Information
Denver, the capital and largest city in the state of Colorado, is situated in the South Platte River Valley on the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. At an altitude of 5,280 feet above sea level, the city has affectionately been named the “Mile High City” due to its incredibly lofty elevation. Settled in 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, Denver has since grown to a busy metropolitan city that still support its mining and agricultural roots. The sprawling city is composed of seventy-nine neighborhoods, namely Union Station, Capitol Hill, Highland, Washington Park, Lowry, and Uptown. Transportation to and within Denver is relatively easy. The contemporary Denver International Airport serves as the hub for Frontier Airlines and United Airlines, who together serve over a hundred destinations in several countries. The Regional Transportation District serves the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area via its extensive bus service and six light rail lines that run through the city. The I- 25, I-70, and I-76 run directly through Denver and flow smoothly for the majority of the day.
Because of its superb geographic location halfway between the west coast and the
Midwest, Denver has become increasingly focused on acting as a distribution hub for
goods headed to other cities in the Mountain region as well as products being sent
between the east and west coasts. Nonetheless, Samsonite, Qwest, Russell Stover,
Molson Coors Brewing Company, and a host of other companies are based in Denver.
Large corporate offices for companies headquartered elsewhere are also scattered
across the city with Lockheed Martin, United Airlines, Kroger Co. and Xcel Energy all
maintaining large offices in the area. The Denver Mint is also located locally and is one
of the city?s largest employers.
The Denver Public Schools operates a large network of campuses to serve students of all ages with convenient schools that are close to home for most city residents. Over 73 elementary schools, 15 K-8 schools, 17 middle schools, 14 high schools, and 19 charter schools are joined by a host of higher educational institutions like the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and Community College of Denver to serve the city?s learning and educational needs.
Several sports establishments have created loyal followings in Denver. The NFL?s
Denver Broncos bring in thousands of fans every Sunday during football season at
Invesco Field at Mile High. Coors Field hosts the Colorado Rockies, a professional
baseball team. The Colorado Avalanche, a NHL hockey team, are based at the Pepsi
Center in the city. It is not uncommon for the city to feel deserted on game days as
hoards of fans pack these stadiums and arenas to support their local teams. A number
of annual events bring the large community together to celebrate a variety of occasions.
The Dragon Boat Festival, Moon Festival, and Chinese New Year are sponsored by the
city?s Asian population while Cinco de Mayo and El Grito de la Independencia are
hosted by the Latino community. A number of holidays are also commemorated,
namely Independence Day, Memorial Day, and Thanksgiving.
